3D and protunes firmware did not work...

Postby captain3d » Sat Oct 13, 2012 6:45 am

Hi All

I have a 3d kit with hero2's. I updated to the latest firmware to try out protunes. Both cameras updated fine and I could individually shoot with protunes enabled but 3d was screwed up...

When I turned on the cameras the left camera started recording by itself then stopped after a few seconds (I do not have one button mode active). When I used the right camera to start recording both cameras start as expected. But when I used the same button to stop recording the left camera did not stop. I swapped cameras and the same problem happed but now with the other camera in the left position on the 3D sync cable. I also tried a second sync cable and confirmed the same bad behavior. The problem was very consistent and repeatable.

...I just went through a manual revert to the previous firmware by copying it to the SD card.

After reverting my 3D sync is back to normal.

boooooo Protunes firmware.

The only good news is that I didnt feel like I needed the extra Protunes abilities for my quad copter shots.

I have had exactly the same issue today, and fortunately I was able to reverse the firmware upgrade. I guess the advice is don't upgrade if you're using 3D

I read from someone else that they only got 3D sync to work by turning on the cameras then plugging in the sync cable. Crap

My Protune works just fine in 3D. Check video here http://youtu.be/AqEPrjWxNcU Even with the extended 3D cable. It does only work if you start it with the right cam as intended in the 3D housing where the start button is hidden on the right cam. The only shame is that 24p is actually 24.00 and not 23.976 as over about a minute the converted file in Cineform to 23.976 is actually 2 frames longer.
Overall can't complaint and it does actually look much better with the flatter, more exposed image, without any collor correction when viewed on a 3DTV where the 3D glassed naturally dim the exposure, getting it back to the level you actually want it to be at. Compared to original 15Mbps normal and good 2D image in 3D with the glasses on, quite a lot on shadow detail gets completely lost in the blackness.
Don't know what to tell you guys, but I would keep on trying as it is well worth it.

3D with the current ProTune firmware only works in 24T mode. The left eye camera will hang when booting in the 30T mode.

I hope a fix is on the way, since action video looks terrible at 24 fps.

As I said it works for me, here is videoproof:

I had the left cam starting bug now once and I think it depends on how you boot your cams. I just shut it down, started it again and then it worked.

Yes, power on the cameras without cable, and plug it after that.
No more freeze since this trick, but still sometimes cams stops after a few sec.
with class10 cards. I have to press record again.
Just enough time to power up my quadcopter :)

Somebody has info about can we use the sync cable with hero3 black?

Aaargh! I think I experienced this problem today too.

Recently updated the firmware but am not yet (intentionally) using protune.

Turned on the cameras after the sync cord was inserted. Can't quite see the pattern but the left and right cameras were responding differently to the shutter button---not both turning on and off at the same time. After my dive (I'm filming my SCUBA dives) I have 60 clips saved in the right camera and 17 in the left.

So...what is the consensus work around and/or fix? Plug in the cable after the cameras are on? Revert to the previous firmware?

Also, I presume I have some overlapping 3d content in the clips, any suggestions on how I edit them so they line up with each other? If I do this in a separate program can they still be fed into Cineform? Or should I run them through Cineform first?

Be sure to let GoPro know because my reply from them said everything was tested and confirmed to be working fine. I reverted the firmware and have had no problem since.
