Difference in focal range sharpness Hero3 Blk vs Plus

Postby Markarch » Wed Oct 09, 2013 11:30 am

Hey all.
Check out the discussion at the link below. There is some interesting comparisons between the 3 and the 3+ still image quality. I'm interested to hear what others are experiencing.

PLEASE READ
I've merged and changed this topic heading as some of the info has been spread in a few different threads.

There are reports of differences in the sharpness between the Hero3 Blk and the new Hero3 Blk Plus as regards focal range.

It appears the Plus version is sharper on objects closer to the camera and less sharp on distance objects when compared to the previous Hero3 Blk version, this is confirmed by GoPro and also acknowledged by Abe on his website. How this will affect users will depend on the that users intended usage and expectations. I think for most people it won't be a deal breaker and is only apparent when doing a 100% crop of the frame for pixel peeping purposes. However people upgrading from previous model to the Plus should be aware of the changes.

Reports and discussions follow.

a few comments there about video, not just stills, being out of focus. that points towards a QA problem.

otherwise, it seems like the JPGs are just over-compressed, which could be (a) a fixed in firmware or (b) they're using crappy cards, and the camera has some "smarts" to crank up the compression (the camera may also have "smarts" to apply more compression to video, if it detects a slower card? not something i've tested).

of the in-depth video reviews i've seen, the 3+ seems to have noticeably better IQ, so i think any problems they're having will (a) be fixed with a firmware update (to use less compression on JPGs) and/or (b) result from some duds slipping past QA (and be resolved with a warranty replacement).

in any case, i'll be keeping an eye on it, until i've got a 3+ in my hands and i'm happy with the IQ.

I've seen plenty of photos posted by Hero3+ users that look amazing.
Mine has arrived today, so I will test it out in a couple of hours when I get home, and let you know.

does that website strip out EXIF data?

my opinion... way over-compressed. i'd expect a firmware update to fix it.

What sort of filesize was the Hero3 outputting for 12MP photos?
The Hero3+ seems to be averaging about 4MB
