Stickie : Wavy lines through Video

The GoPro uses a CMOS sensor. There are many benefits to using a CMOS type lens sensor, lots of high end HD cameras use them.

1.Low battery drain.
2.Minimal purple smearing from direct sun on the lens.
3.Small size

One of the draw backs of this type of of sensor is that rapid vertical camera movement will cause wavy lines or "jello effect" to appear in the recorded video, this originates because CMOS sensors have Rolling Shutters. To minimize this, eliminate vibration and camera vertical movement as much as possible. This is true for any CMOS video camera not just a GoPro.

Motor Sports users will find rigid mounting to the roll bar will cause vibrations as it's bolted to the car Chassis, so you need to isolate the Cam with foam or rubber.

I use the wrist mount wrapped around the foam on the of the roll bar and my wavy lines are minimal.

I think the upgraded components in the new 2008 camera have pretty much fixed this. I recently got one of their roll bar mounts which I've used to capture some great video from some pretty high vibration surfaces. Maybe the rubber strip on the mount helps isolate the camera a little as well, but I'd chalk this improvement up to the better components inside the new camera since all the mounts seem to produce similar results.

When you say new 2008 model, are you aware of a 1st and 2nd generation wide angle model? I haven't put this to GoPro yet, but i suspect there could be.

Shoot - sorry to cause any confusion :? - I think there is only 1 generation of wide cameras from GoPro so far (got mine at Interbike in late September '08). For a while there I was hoping we might be able to get a wide lens adapter, but it looks like they decided it was better to go with a new camera all together. Fine with me! When I got it, I was told the internal components like the sensor and processor had been upgraded - my observation is that the results from my new (2008) camera is far superior to its predecessor. The reason I used "2008..." is because I think it was the only new camera in their line that came out this year. The new camera comes in either a wide 170 degree lens version, or their standard 54 degree lens version. I used the date in my wording, etc, so there would be some relevance to what I was talking about in the future.

That's ok, i thought there might have been an upgrade i wasn't aware of, the neutral density coatings on the wide angle lens pushes the sensor and processor to it's limits so bight sunlight is a must for clean footage. Also a hood to shade the lens works well, the big fish-eye bulb captures a hot spot from the sun and confuses the sensor/processor. Sun directly over head is best.
