GoPro3 Black purchase advice

Postby accordingi2ime » Sat Dec 29, 2012 12:10 pm

I am planning to get the GoPro 3 Black but not sure what size sd card to get? I will mainly use the camera to film while snowboarding.
In what circumstances would you recommend going with the bigger card?
How much data will 32gb card hold in different video settings? In it's highest setting how many hours of video can it hold?
I have been reading that battery life is short. Would it be wise to buy the battery pack? Just extra battery?

Please let me know your experiences with it.
Thanks

The highest recording data rate of the Hero3 black is 45Mb/s (Megabits per second) this is equal to 5.625MB/s (Megabytes per second)

This will be
337.5MB per minute
19.77GB per hour

Here are the hero3 battery runtime tests I did a while back gopro-hd-hero-1-2-3-battery-life-tests-t8062.html

32GB card is enough if just using a single battery and its still not likely you will need more then 32GB very often even when using a battery bacpac in a single battery run going by these tests. Timelapse modes will use more data then all video modes so anyone shooting many timelapses with short intervals may want a card above 32GB as its the only mode I have managed to fill a 64GB card withing one battery cycle using the batt bacpac.

Batt bacpac is great if your doing something you dont have access to the camera for an extended time or you dont want to be opening the housing or cant as in my case being underwater its a little tricky lol. Otherwise if you can easily change batteries or SD cards then this may be the easier and cheaper option with recording times only limited by how many batteries your carrying.
