Here is what I have so far
Code: Select all
-30-----29-
3v  . . gnd
gnd . .  3v
    . .
B+  . .  B+
3v  . .  3v
3v  . .  3v
3v  . . gnd
    . .
2v  . .
    . .mode
gnd . .

gnd . .
    . .
5v  . .  5v
    . .
gnd . .
-2-------1-

Briefly shorting any of the 3 volt pins to ground didn't do anything, I need to solder up some pins or something that will let me make better connections and solder up some wires and 10k resistors so I can jumper different things. I was a little surprised that I didn't find the video signal when live video was turned on. I was also surprised that I didn't find the LED though it might pull one of the other unknown pins really low to complete the circuit for an LED. I'm not sure what to make of the 2 volt pin. I was probing these with an oscope and didn't see any pulses on any of the voltage pins.

thanks for your work so far, if you enable one button shooting can you turn on the camera and have it start recording right away if you trigger the mode button remotely?

Should work the same as pressing the front button, so yes it should work.

I should add that to be really useful you would want the LED next to your remote button so that you knew it was really going. I really hope they put the LED on that connector. Probably going to be some time next week before I make more progress since all the parts I need are at work.

I was thinking about this during the drive to work... Could that +2 volts be power for an electret microphone? I can't think of any other use for it out there on the connector. I think I'm going to try pushing some audio into some of those unknown pins and see what happens. Might still need to pull one of the 3 volts pins low to make it work though.

Does anyone know what type of CPU that is used in the GoPro HD? It is probably the smaller chip to the upper left that is the CPU. The hynix chip is just a flash memory chip.

It's a bit hard to read the text on the CPU chip on these picture:

I doubt any of the components on the rear board are for the express purpose of heating. Heating is a waste of electricity on anything but a Mars exploration robot. The CPU is on that board, so plenty of spare processing heat comes from it.

I think it comes down to few of us are willing to risk our cameras. Need one with a damaged lens that no one cares about anymore. The Hynix is definitely memory, probably RAM (but I haven't looked it up to see what the data sheet says).

Yes, if someone dares to open their camera please take high resolution photos of all the three circuit boards.

I did just load the Gopro firmware into a disassembler tool (reverse engineering) and it sure generates some interesting assembly code, but to be sure that it is correct you need to know the exact type of the CPU. It would be nice to get some hacks to the GoPro firmware, like the CHDK for Canon cameras. From the Image sensor data sheet you get all the instructions for how to alter e.g. the resolution or exposure time. The image sensor is e.g. capable of capturing 640 x 480 @ 120fps or 2592 x 1944 @ 14fps...

This is the datasheet for the Hynix 256Mbit Nand Flash Memory

hmm, non of those IC's seems to be a CPU, or at least not a CPU that I have heard of, must be on some of the other boards...

but thanks for posting matt :)

I used to see custom made electronics with brand or type of chips ID being sanded away by end product manufacturer.
I think if GoPro uses a special chip which I think they can at their current sales volume, it will be tough to ID no ?
